Near to the Brokenhearted

The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.Psalm 34:18 · KJV

Reflection

When something breaks our heart — a death, a diagnosis, a betrayal — one of the cruellest feelings is that God has gone quiet. The Psalms do not hide from that feeling; many of them begin with it.

But this verse insists on something we cannot always feel: nearness. God is not standing at a distance waiting for us to recover. He is close to those whose hearts are in pieces.

Jesus wept at the tomb of his friend Lazarus, though he knew what he was about to do (John 11:35). God's nearness does not hurry our grief. It keeps us company in it.

Apply it

If you are grieving, give yourself permission not to be okay. Tell God honestly how you feel — even in one word. If someone you know is grieving, be near them this week without trying to fix it.

Pray

Lord, you are near to the brokenhearted. Be near to me — and to [name] — in this sorrow. Amen.
