Prayer

Prayer for every season of life.

Prayers you can pray today — for mornings and evenings, anxiety, healing, family, work and hard times — the great prayers of the Bible, and a place to share a request.

Evening prayer

At the end of the day
Lord, the day is done. Thank you for every good thing in it, noticed and unnoticed. Forgive me where I fell short, and help me forgive those who hurt me. I hand back to you what is unfinished. Keep the people I love tonight, and give me the rest that comes from trusting you. Amen.
Psalm 4:8 — “I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep.” (KJV)

Prayer for anxiety

When worry won't settle
Father, my mind is racing and my chest is tight. You said to cast all my care on you because you care for me, so here it is: [name what you're afraid of]. I can't hold all of tomorrow, so help me hold only today. Give me your peace, the kind that doesn't depend on everything being fixed, and show me the one next step. Amen.
1 Peter 5:7 · Philippians 4:6–7 · Matthew 6:34 (KJV)

Prayer for healing

For yourself or someone who is ill
Lord Jesus, you touched the sick and healed them. I bring you [name], and the illness they are carrying. Bring healing to their body, peace to their mind, and courage to their heart. Give wisdom and skill to doctors and nurses who care for them. And whatever comes, hold them close and do not let them feel alone. Amen.
James 5:14–15 · Matthew 8:16–17 (KJV)

Prayer for family

For the people under your roof
Father, thank you for my family, the easy parts and the hard parts. Protect us, provide for us, and keep us honest with one another. Where there is tension, bring peace; where there is hurt, bring forgiveness; where there is distance, bring us back together. Make our home a place where your love is easy to see. Amen.
Joshua 24:15 · Colossians 3:12–14 (KJV)

Prayer for relationships

For a friendship, marriage or strained relationship
Lord, you made us for each other and know how hard that can be. I bring you my relationship with [name]. Help me listen more than I speak, and assume the best rather than the worst. Show me where I need to apologise and give me the courage to do it. Teach us to love the way you love: patiently, kindly, faithfully. Amen.
1 Corinthians 13:4–7 · Romans 12:18 (KJV)

Prayer for guidance

Before a decision
God of wisdom, I don't know what to do about [name the decision]. You promised to give wisdom generously to anyone who asks, so I am asking. Quiet the voices of fear and pride in me. Show me through your word, through wise counsel and through circumstances. And if the way is still unclear, give me peace to take the next faithful step. Amen.
James 1:5 · Proverbs 3:5–6 (KJV)

Prayer for strength

When you are running on empty
Lord, I am tired and I have nothing left. You said that those who wait on you will renew their strength. I'm waiting now. Give me strength not to soar, but simply to keep walking today without fainting. And show me where I need to rest, ask for help, or put something down. Amen.
Isaiah 40:29–31 · 2 Corinthians 12:9 (KJV)

Prayer for forgiveness

When you've done wrong — or been wronged
Merciful God, I have sinned against you and against others. I'm sorry for [name it], and for what it cost. Thank you that if we confess our sins you are faithful and just to forgive. Wash me clean and help me put right what I can. And give me grace to forgive [name], as you have forgiven me. Amen.
1 John 1:9 · Psalm 51:10 · Ephesians 4:32 (KJV)

Prayer for difficult times

In grief, loss or crisis
Lord, I don't understand what is happening, and it hurts. You are near to the brokenhearted — please be near to me. I don't need all the answers right now; I need you. Carry me where I can't walk, and send people who can help. Keep hope alive in me, even if it's only a flicker. Amen.
Psalm 34:18 · Psalm 46:1 · Romans 8:38–39 (KJV)

Prayer for children

For your children or children in your care
Father, thank you for [names]. Keep them safe in body, mind and heart. Give them friends who are good for them, and the courage to be kind. When they fail, let them know they are still loved. Help me be patient with them and to show them, more than tell them, what you are like. Amen.
Mark 10:14–16 · Proverbs 22:6 (KJV)

Prayer for work

Before work or when work is hard
Lord, I offer you my work today, the visible and the unseen. Help me do it well and honestly, as if I were working for you. Give me patience with colleagues, integrity when shortcuts tempt me, and perspective so that my worth is not measured by my output. Provide what I need, and help me be generous with what I have. Amen.
Colossians 3:23 · Psalm 90:17 (KJV)

Prayer of thanksgiving

Any time
God, thank you. Thank you for life and breath, for food and shelter, for people who love me and people who have put up with me. Thank you for beauty I didn't earn and mercies I didn't notice. Most of all, thank you for Jesus. Teach me to give thanks in everything — not for everything, but in it. Amen.
1 Thessalonians 5:16–18 · Psalm 107:1 (KJV)
Biblical prayers

Prayers Christians have prayed for millennia.

Scripture in the King James Version; the Jesus Prayer from the Eastern tradition.

Psalm 23

Psalm 23 (KJV) — the shepherd psalm
The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
Traditionally prayed in times of fear, illness and grief.

The Priestly Blessing

Numbers 6:24–26 (KJV)
The LORD bless thee, and keep thee: The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.
A blessing to pray over someone else — a child at bedtime, a friend leaving on a journey.

The Jesus Prayer

A short prayer from the Eastern Christian tradition
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.
Drawn from Luke 18:13 and Mark 10:47. Central to Orthodox spirituality; prayed slowly and repeatedly, often with the breath.

Psalm 121

Psalm 121:1–3, 7–8 (KJV) — for travel and protection
I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.
One of the Songs of Ascents, sung by pilgrims travelling to Jerusalem.
