The Lamp and the Path

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.Psalm 119:105 · KJV

Reflection

An oil lamp in ancient Israel was a small clay dish with a wick. Held low, it lit the ground just ahead of your feet. It did not light up the valley.

Many of us want the floodlight: the full five-year plan, the guaranteed outcome. Scripture rarely works that way. It shows us how to take the next faithful step — be honest, be generous, forgive, rest, pray — and trusts God with the road beyond the circle of light.

Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible, and its writer is not in a peaceful place: he mentions persecution, affliction and sleeplessness. The lamp is for walking in the dark.

Apply it

Read one short passage today (try Psalm 121). Ask: what is the next step this asks of me? Not the whole plan — just the next step.

Pray

Lord, I want to see the whole road. Give me instead the light for the next step, and the trust to take it. Amen.
