Reflection
John's Gospel opens by echoing Genesis: 'In the beginning.' In creation, God spoke light into darkness. Now, John says, the Light itself has come into the world.
The Greek word translated 'comprehended' can mean both 'understood' and 'overcame'. Both are true. The darkness did not understand Jesus, and it could not defeat him — not even at the cross.
You may be in a season where the darkness seems large. A single candle in a dark room changes the whole room. The promise is not that darkness never comes, but that it does not get the last word.

Pray
Jesus, Light of the world, shine into the dark places in me and in the people I love. Amen.
