Do Justly, Love Mercy, Walk Humbly

He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?Micah 6:8 · KJV

Reflection

Micah's listeners asked a religious question: what offering would satisfy God? Thousands of rams? Rivers of oil? Micah's answer is startlingly simple and far more demanding.

Do justice — act fairly, especially toward people with little power. Love mercy — not just tolerate it, but delight in kindness and loyal love (the Hebrew is hesed). Walk humbly with God — keep company with him, aware that you are not God.

The three hold one another in balance. Justice without mercy becomes harsh; mercy without justice becomes sentimental; both without humility become self-righteous.
